How You Profit from Beyoncé and Bieber? (3) – Deal Channels?

Continuing from the previous post, I don’t believe a small team can consistently purchase copyrights from various A-list celebrities. So, I’m very interested in knowing whether their deal channels are reliable, sustainable, what their pipeline looks like, and how they manage to acquire these copyrights.

The person I talked to is Tim, and he was quite frank in his response. He said, “Of course, we don’t buy directly from A-list celebrities like Bieber or Beyoncé! The premium is too high (multiples can reach over 20), it’s just not worth it. You see, the copyright of any song doesn’t belong to just one person. The lyricists, composers, singers, drummers, producers, etc., all may have their share of the copyright. Generally, the copyright of a song is held by 5-15 individuals. Apart from the most famous one among them, the rest are just ordinary people who experience various life events like aging, illness, and death. It’s easier to approach these people than the top celebrities, and there are more of them. Perhaps some of them, due to old age, no longer want to receive annual royalties and prefer a lump sum payment, or maybe they need cash due to divorce and decide to sell the rights, or they have numerous heirs who collectively decide to sell the rights for various reasons such as buying a house or a car.”

I asked, “So, which of these scenarios do the sellers who approach you fall into?” Let’s continue this conversation next time!
