How You Profit from Beyoncé and Bieber? (6) – Proof of Copyright?

Continuing from last post, Tim explained that there are three major industry associations here (I forgot the names, they are mentioned in the video, please email for details).Whenever someone creates a song, the copyright owner of that song must register it with the association, which serves as proof of copyright. If there is any transfer of copyright, the association must also be informed so that the new copyright owner can be registered, ensuring that royalties are paid to the correct owner.

My follow-up question was, how can we ensure that royalties are not skimmed off once the copyright is established? Tim said, “You may not be familiar with this industry, but these copyright associations make a lot of money, so they have a large budget specifically for this purpose. For example, they hire people to drive around and check if bars, restaurants, etc., are playing songs without paying royalties. It’s easier to monitor TV, radio, and major platforms. Although we can’t guarantee that every penny is collected, we can get the majority of it.”

I then asked about song management. For example, if I own a building, the job is to need to collect rent, do maintenance, evict tenants, and advertise for new tenants etc; do songs also need active management? For example, promoting songs, creating remixes, or placing them in movies? I found myself getting carried away and even chuckled at the thought. I asked, “Do you guys handle these things too? It doesn’t seem like it!”

We’ll continue this conversation next time.
