The Closest I’ve Ever Been to Changing the World (11 Finale) — How to Participate?

Continuing from the last post, I asked him what projects he had done before and what his track record looked like.

He said he has always been passionate about energy. His first company was in telecom, which he successfully sold. Later, in the 1990s, he founded Tradewind Energy, which he sold to an Italian energy giant. At the time of sale, it was worth several hundred million, and it later grew into a company valued around $35 billion — so technically, he’s already a decacorn founder 😂. After that, he built a biodiesel plant, sold it successfully, and then founded a solar development company, which raised about $250 million and was also successfully sold.

He laughed, saying that even today, many of his early investors still send him Christmas cards every year since he made a lot of money for a lot of people😂. He’s always been thinking about how to fix the energy industry — and this time, he believes he’s tackling one of the most fundamental and wide-reaching pain points for the congested grid we have today. He’s genuinely excited and says this could be a planetary-scale solution — something at a cosmic level of impact 😂.

I told him he’s probably one with the highest networth among all my subscribers, and also the first decacorn founder I’ve done a deep-dive interview with on my show – just a super solid track record.

He said his motivation has always been to make energy as an industry better — to solve grid transmission problems, accelerate clean energy production, and build more energy infrastructure for the planet and for future generations. In short, he’s been relentless in his pursuit of energy innovation.

I asked, “So how can people participate in this round?”

He said he’s a technical and operational founder, not from a finance background, so many of his early supporters were individuals. Because of that experience, for each project, he tries to give something back to the community. There will be a community round, structured through an SPV. And for my followers, he said he’ll waive SPV fees and carry — the usual 2 and 20 — with a minimum of $10K to join. No management fees, no carry — just as a gesture of appreciation for the community.

What I appreciated most throughout the conversation with Troy was that, despite all his past successes and exits and where he is at today, he’s still hands-on — He does the pitches himself still, we corresponded directly and he took time to check out a lot of my content before we talked. That gives me confidence he’s still fully engaged at the operator level, not just a figurehead, and that shows in the tight ship operation they are running.

Overall, I personally feel that if this technology truly works, it could change the world. Among all the companies I’ve invested in, this might be the closest I could ever be to participating in something that could truly change the world for the better. Even if this fails for whatever reason at the end of the day, I’d still be happy that I was part of this; if it succeeds and I have a strong conviction that it will since I think the leader, the team, the technology, the capital and the markets are all very much aligned in this case, besides financial return, I can brag a little that I played a tiny part in changing the world for the better 😂.
